Are you aware of what your triggers are, what easily upsets you? Do you know what your spouse’s triggers are? If you are conscious of what pet peeves you and your spouse have, you will be better equipped to manage your reaction.
Pick and choose your battles. If I know that my groom gets very irritated with me when I tell him that I’m going to do something and don’t (run a errand on specific day, or cook). He’s a man of his word and he expects everyone else to be as well. somehow I may have gotten distracted or just forgot, I better be ready to respond to what I know is a big deal to him. Or if my groom criticizes me on something that I feel he doesn’t and /or do himself(Like leaving trash in car, leave clothes everywhere), he better be ready for how I react. Sometimes, if I know I triggered his emotions, I will warn him in advance, or he may ask if I remembered to do something. It leads back to control; we can manage our decisions (reactions), and try a little harder to avoid known triggers.
